End of Term Information
End of Summer Term — Friday 19th July 2019
Start of Autumn Term — Tuesday 3 rd September 2019
I am writing to inform you of the arrangements for the end of the Summer Term and the start of the Autumn Term
The academy will close for the summer holidays on Friday 19th July 2019 at 12:15pm. Packed lunches will be available for students who are entitled to a free school meal.
Pegasus Academy will re-open for ALL students on Tuesday 3 rd September 2019 and will be a staggered return for students in the academy. Year groups will return at the following times:
Year 7 – 8:30am
Year 8 – 9:30am
Year 9 – 9:30am
Year 10 – 10:15am
Year 11 – 10:15am
I would also like to take this opportunity to refresh the expectations of every child at Pegasus Academy.
Parental Meetings and Contact Details
If you are asked to attend a parental meeting it is imperative that you attend. By working together, we can usually solve any problems that arise with your child’s education. Likewise, accurate contact details are vitally important. Please can I ask you to ensure that the Academy is made aware of any changes to your address or contact number as soon as possible.
It is an expectation that your child has at least 98% attendance. It is proven that poor attendance reduces a student’s attainment levels in all areas of the curriculum. If your child is unable to attend due to a medical issue, please adhere to Academy procedures. If you need to book a hospital, doctor’s or dental appointment please set the appointment for early in the Academy day or after 2.00pm. If students injure their foot or wrist we can still facilitate their education which will prevent any absence being accrued.
- It is not advisable to take children out of the Academy for holidays. Any request for holidays within the academic year must be applied for by completing an absence form, four weeks prior to the date of absence.
There is clear evidence of a link between poor attendance at the academy and low levels of achievement.
Some facts and figures:
- 17 days absence = 1 drop in a GCSE grade.
- 10% absence = 1/2 day absence per week = 4 weeks per year. Over 5 years this means a child has missed half a year of the schooling.
- Of students who miss more than 50 per cent of school, only three percent manage to achieve five grade 5 or above GCSEs including English and maths.
- Of students who miss between 5 and 10 percent of school, only 35 percent manage to achieve five GCSEs including English and maths.
- Of students who miss less than five percent of school, 73 percent achieve five grade 5 or above GCSEs including English and maths.
As you are aware the Academy day starts at 8.40am and students go straight into Period 1 lessons where they will be registered. This means that if your child is late they will miss valuable learning time. If your child is late they must sign in at main reception and will also lose a line in their planner. If your child fails to do so, they will be marked as absent and Educational Investigation Services will be contacted as per academy procedure.
We have a wonderful pastoral team at Pegasus Academy. If there are any issues preventing your child from attending, give us a call and we will try our best to help. The telephone number for our attendance officer, Mrs smith, is 01384 253722 – Option 1.
Students are provided with planners in September. All students are expected to have their planners and to have them signed every week by parent/carers. Replacement planners cost £4.50.
May we remind you of our uniform expectations. Students must adhere to our uniform policy. Hoodie type tops are
not deemed school uniform. Earrings should be small, plain, metal studs (one in each lobe). No other jewellery is allowed. Student arriving at the Academy with incorrect uniform will lose a line in their planner.
Students deemed not to be in the correct footwear, will be expected to borrow/use a pair of school owned shoes and also lose a line in their planner. A sanction will be imposed if they are non-compliant.
Can I remind you that mobile phones, Ipods, MP3/4 players, Smart watches and headphones cannot be used at any time on the Academy site and will be confiscated if seen.
Illegal Drugs / Items that may cause harm to others
It must be noted that any student who brings any of the above items on site will be excluded in line with the Academy’s Value Driven Expectations and Behaviour policies.
Academy Car Park
Please do not enter the Academy gates in your vehicle to pick up or drop off students. It is a risk to health and safety. Can I also remind parents that parking on the yellow lines outside the academy is also not acceptable.
All school policies, including the School Uniform and Behaviour Policy, and next year’s school dates are available on our website at www.pegasusacademy.or.uk
Finally, can I take this opportunity to wish you a fantastic summer break and thank you for all the support you have given your child and the Academy this academic year.
Mr AP Landers
